large group -- best approach?

Okay, right now we have a call for a 7-bedroom house just for the "YES" people, and we may need more if more people want to come. I've been scanning some Hatteras rental sites, and 7 bedrooms is pretty close to a practical maximum for rental houses, though there are a few houses in the 10-bedroom range. The extra-large houses tend to be more recently built with mucho amenities. On a strictly personal basis, I'm not attracted to these houses because they seem so unlike the Hatteras experience of my childhood, and because I'm a low-maintenance vacationer myself. Basically I'm good to go with: a shady porch, a book, an easy walk to the beach, and an outdoor shower. We're all different, though, and we will have kids along and we have to recognize that it might rain. So amenities could be very welcome to some of you.

Please give me your feedback on the following. If we do need to accommodate a larger number of people (8+ bedrooms), which approach do you prefer (or feel free to suggest something I haven't thought of)?

1. reserve one of the super-sized houses near Hatteras. In addition to # of rooms, these houses tend to be have more amenities and be more expensive, e.g. pools, elevators, game rooms, etc. @ up to $1000/bedroom/week. Here's an example of what I'm talking about: big, fancy house.

2. split up into two smaller, neighboring houses. The amenity levels with this solution can be high, medium or low, even (possibly) one higher-amenity and one lower amenity (not sure how easy that would be to find). Here are two houses that I believe are close together in Avon (would have to work with a rental agent to be sure to get two that are right next door). At this amenity level, these houses are more like $500-$600 per bedroom:
Avon house #1
Avon house #2

3. get one house for 2 weeks (if Dad is willing to stay two weeks) and have family rotate in and out, with some staying the first week and others the second. This solution would probably create a pile-up during the straddle weekend, but could be do-able if some are willing to temporarily sleep on air mattresses and couches during the "peak."

Please leave your feedback in the comments.

  1. The big, fancy house looks awesome, and would probably accommodate a large group better than several small houses, in terms of where we could all get together. I like the idea of all of us getting together at the same time. That is what a family reunion is all about.

Marie and I both think that a cruise ship reunion should be considered as an option. The big advantage, aside from easily accommodating all of us, is that nobody has to do any cooking, or cleaning, or housekeeping all week.

  2. Hi Peter,

If you and Marie want to pitch a different sort of vacation, can you first check with Dad? If he prefers the cruise, or would equally enjoy a cruise, why don't you send me a little bit verbiage about what you have in mind, and I'll post it on the blog for people to comment on.
